SANDRA FILIPPUCCI | Spines Series 2011
earlier paintings | earlier sculpture | earlier prints
SPINES SERIES is a reaction to the mountain fires and drought in Santa Fe this past Summer. Ash coated every surface, smoke choked the air…it was Vesuvian, apocalyptic. Green was brown and brown became gray with dollops of burnt umber. And on the ground, spiny bits of beauty sprouted flowers. One cannot but help admire cactus. Primitive, fantastic. This Series also came on the heels of a trip to Mexico City to see the great public murals of Orozco, Rivera and Siqueiros. It would appear however, that what affected me most on that trip were the intense, riotous colors I saw everywhere, which also managed to survive the city heat and pollution.
This Series will also include many encaustic monotypes, which will be on the Morrison Gallery's new website scheduled for Late Fall 2011.
