Sculptor Jonathan Prince
KENT, CT – (December 14, 2010) – Works by four giants of the 20th Century American art
scene will be on display from December 18th through February 28th at The Morrison
Gallery in Kent, Connecticut.
The exhibit includes works on
paper by Hans Hofmann; oils and pastels by Wolf Kahn; oils and acrylics by Cleve Gray and steel and stone sculpture by
Jonathan Prince.
Hans Hofmann played a pivotal role in the development of Abstract Expressionism and as ateacher he brought to America direct knowledge of the work of a celebrated group of European modernists. Hofmann's paintings were the subject of exhibitions at major institutions such as the Addison Gallery of American Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art and The Museum of Modern Art. Hofmann was also one of four artists representing the United States at the Venice Biennale in 1960. Hofmann was close to 70 years old when, in a dazzling burst of energy he painted most of the large, highly recognizable canvases of the late 1950s and 1960s that assured his reputation.
Wolf Kahn Wolf Kahn is considered one of the finest landscape painters of our time. His work currently hangs in New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art and Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, DC and the Los Angeles County Museum.
Cleve Gray was inspired by artists like Jackson Pollock, Clyfford Still, Mark Rothko and Helen Frankenthaler. In the 1960s he began to produce large paintings using a variety of application methods - pouring, staining, sponging and other nontraditional techniques - to create compositions combining expanses of pure color and spontaneous calligraphic gestures. His work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art and many other museums. In 2004, after a brilliant career, "the painter who jumped the romantic fence" died at the age of 86.
Jonathan Prince is considered by many to be a new master of 20th Century modernist sculpture. With emphasis on elegance, precision, and material qualities, Jonathan Prince's sculpture explore the expansive potential for formal and expressive variety latent in stone and steel. Sinuous, organic volumes suggest the presence of a fluid element within solid granite or metal, while pristinely polished surfaces and perfect geometries create a contrasting machine aesthetic. Prince's geometric abstractions and clear awareness of both mass relationships and surface qualities demonstrate his artistic inheritance from the great masters Isamu Noguchi, Constantin Brancusi and Jean Arp.
The Morrison Gallery is a 7,000 square foot space in the historic Old Barn section of Kent
and is home to an on-going schedule of exhibitions by prominent local and national artists.
